Drone imports

Drone Import and Customs Clearance in India: check before you order.

We help with imports of drones, drone components, batteries and radio equipment: what the rules allow, which papers are needed, and the Customs clearance. Please speak to us before paying a foreign supplier.

Monday to Saturday, 10 AM to 7 PM IST (closed Sundays and public holidays). You do not need to send documents first: tell us in two lines what is happening and we reply with the list we need.

The short answer

Under DGFT Notification No. 54/2015-20 (9 February 2022), importing drones in finished (CBU), kit (SKD) or knocked-down (CKD) form is prohibited unless the DGFT grants an import authorisation. That route is meant for research and development and for defence and security. Components are treated differently, but some need other approvals. Read the full guide: How to import drones in India.

Which route are you on?

Finished drones

Ready-to-fly drones and kits. Import needs a DGFT authorisation and is open only for certain purposes. Speak to us before ordering.

Components and parts

Frames, motors, controllers and propellers. We check that the set is not a drone in kit form and which approvals apply.

Batteries

Lithium batteries carry transport and safety rules of their own.

Radio, camera and links

Transmitters, receivers, video links and cameras can need wireless approval.

Drone import check

Answer every question. You get an initial check: a document list, the reasons, and the points we will verify. A person reviews every drone case.

Please choose an answer for every question marked in the list above. This is an initial check for human review, not an approval.

What we do for you

  • Tell you, before you pay the supplier, whether your goods can be imported and by which route
  • Prepare the papers and the DGFT authorisation application where it applies
  • Identify the correct tariff heading for each item and explain the duty
  • Arrange Customs clearance and reply to Customs queries

Documents to have ready

  • Commercial invoice or proforma invoice
  • Packing list
  • Product brochure or technical specification with model numbers
  • Importer details and IEC
  • Any approvals the supplier already holds
  • The Customs query or notice, if you have received one

Official sources we rely on

Last reviewed: November 2026. Rules change by notification. We confirm the position in force on the date of your matter.

  • Import of finished drones and components: DGFT Notification No. 54/2015-20 dated 9 February 2022 (DGFT notification PDF, Policy Condition No. 03 of Chapter 88, heading 8806). Drones in CBU, CKD and SKD form are prohibited, with exceptions by import authorisation issued by DGFT in consultation with the concerned line ministries. Drone components are in the "Free" category.
  • Operating a drone (separate from importing): the Drone Rules, 2021 as amended: Drone (Amendment) Rules, 2022, Drone (Amendment) Rules, 2023, and the Digital Sky platform.
  • Customs duty and tariff heading: the Customs Tariff on cbic.gov.in. The duty depends on the exact item and its classification, so we do not quote one rate for all drone goods.
  • Filing and tracking at Customs: icegate.gov.in.

Questions

Can a private person or company import a finished drone?

On the notification as it stands, the authorisation route is for research and development and for defence and security, for the categories of importer it names. If your purpose is commercial or hobby use, talk to us before you order.

Do drone parts need a DGFT authorisation?

Under that notification, drone components are not in the prohibition. Some parts still need other approvals, and a set of parts can be treated as a drone in kit form. We check each case.

What is the Customs duty on drones?

It depends on the exact item and its classification, and the rate can change. We do not quote one figure for all drone goods. We confirm the tariff heading and rate for your item on the date of import.

Can you guarantee clearance?

No one can. We tell you what the rules require and prepare the papers properly. The decision rests with the authorities.

How fast will you reply?

We reply to enquiries within 1 working day and give the fee within 1 working day of receiving your documents. The completed draft follows within 48 hours from acceptance. The 48 hours start when you have accepted the fee and we hold every document on the list. Sundays and public holidays are not counted.

Do you give legal advice?

We are consultants, not a law firm. We draft Customs replies and explain procedure based on the Customs Act, the Tariff and notifications in force on the date of your query. For court or tribunal matters you need an advocate.
