Questions
What is an HS code?
The Harmonized System is the international way of naming and numbering goods. The first six digits are the same in most countries. India's Customs Tariff adds two more digits, giving eight-digit tariff items.
Is the import tariff code the same as the export code?
Not always. Imports are classified under the Customs Tariff; exports use the ITC(HS) classification, which is maintained separately. Confirm the right code before you file.
Can I rely on this page to classify my goods?
No. It is a finding aid. Classification depends on the exact goods, the chapter and section notes and the rules in force on the date of import. If Customs has asked about your classification, we can help.
Why are there no duty rates?
Duty rates change with each Budget and notification. Showing an old rate could mislead you, so we send you to the CBIC tariff page for current rates.
Which edition is this?
The First Schedule to the Customs Tariff Act, 1975, as effective from 1 May 2023. Headings and items can change after a Budget, so compare with the current edition on the CBIC website.
